Veterans memorial

(Kathy Plonka)

(Kathy Plonka)

Upon entering the park from the Fourth Street gateway, cross the wide bridge, veer right toward the waterfront and head down the grand staircase. On your left you’ll find a spacious memorial to local veterans. It honors all branches of the U.S. military as well as POWs and those missing in action. Space has been reserved for adding the names of the area’s war dead. The memorial bell, preserved from the old McEuen Park and placed in this more prominent spot, is rung during Memorial Day and Veterans Day services. Across from the memorial is an 18-foot spruce tree, the new “Freedom Tree” that replaced the one removed for park construction.
