LOUISVILLE, Ky. – When the tee times for the first round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club were announced Tuesday, it was easy to see where the most fan attention would be directed.

The University of Idaho men’s golf team has found a new home.

Predicting the PGA Championship winner is a much different beast than doing so for the Masters, considering that Augusta National hosts that tournament every year and thus has some extremely sticky course history (i.e., certain types of golfers seem to play well there every year). Because the PGA Championship is played on a different track each year, course history is generally thrown out the window, though this year’s host, Valhalla in Louisville, has hosted the tournament three times, most recently in 2014, and a number of golfers in this year’s field were among the participants 10 years ago.

Gonzaga Prep’s Dillion Schrock and Lisette Durkin are on top of their respective leaderboards after Monday’s first round at the 4A District 8 tournaments.

Washington’s high school golf season is deep into the back nine with district tournaments next on the tee followed by state. It’s a good time to look back and ahead.

Mead High senior Brooke Bloom and sophomore Ben Barrett took home top individual honors Thursday at the Kalispel Championships. Bloom shot a 3-over 76 at Kalispel Golf and Country Club to win the girls’ title. Barrett was the boys’ medalist with a 3-under 69. Ridgeline’s girls and Lewis and Clark’s boys captured team championships.

There was no shortage of drama when the Greater Spokane League settled the 4A/3A boys’ team championship and individual player of the year honors Tuesday at Wandermere Golf Course. Everything fell into place for Gonzaga Prep in the fifth and final league match.

The struggle was real for the University of Idaho sophomore, by way of Littlehampton, England. The results didn’t match his meticulous approach. Like every golfer, even high-level ones like Sykes stuck in a rough patch, it thoroughly tested his patience and the math major’s analytical mind. Finally, months of frustration melted away as Sykes regained his form and joined a short list of history makers in the Vandal program.

North Idaho College golf coach Russell Grove’s bid to qualify for the PGA Championship for a second straight year came up short Wednesday in Frisco, Texas.
