Colin Cowherd a big fan of Zags, Mark Few

Colin Cowherd isn’t easily impressed, but he likes this year’s Gonzaga basketball team.

Actually, he likes every GU team because they’re a reflection of coach Mark Few: hardworking and conscientious.

“He also has a great dry sense of humor,” added Cowherd, the national sports media personality.

The pair hit it off “six or seven years ago” when Cowherd – an Eastern Washington alum – was in Spokane.

“He’s funny and smart, and cares about hard work and family,” Cowherd said Thursday from Los Angeles, where he’s preparing for a big role in the Super Bowl coverage next week on Fox Sports.

Cowherd admitted that he doesn’t focus on college basketball “until about three days after the Super Bowl,” but knows GU will almost always be in the conversation come March.

“All of Mark’s teams are similar. They have some length – Mark does a good job of getting size – and they play good defense,” said Cowherd, comparing this GU team to last year’s NCAA title team at Villanova.

According to Cowherd, the Bulldogs do that despite the fact that “they get good players, but they don’t get the Kentucky guys or the Carolina guys.”

But does Cowherd believe this GU team is as good as its perfect record? He sidestepped that question but said the West is tougher this year and noted that the Zags knocked off Pac-12 power Arizona earlier this year.

“They’re well-coached and will play their ass off, and they’re a team that nobody wants to play in the tournament,” Cowherd said. “You don’t want to play Gonzaga.”

Reaching the Final Four is a crapshoot, Cowherd said. “It’s all about seeding and a lot of luck.”

Presumably, Cowherd will take up the subject on Feb. 8. That’s when GU is in L.A. to play Loyola Marymount.

“I’m going to take Mark out to dinner,” Cowherd said.
