Summer concert season goes out with a bang
Summer may be more or less over, but the coming week is one of the busiest in recent memory. There’s so much going on, in fact, that there’s no possible way to catch everything, and we simply don’t have the room to write extensively about all of it.
So here’s a quick wrap-up of some of the big music events happening in the next week, including all the headlining musical acts at the Spokane County Interstate Fair.
Iris DeMent – This frequent collaborator with John Prine brings her brand of country-flavored folk to the Bing. Her latest album, “The Trackless Woods,” was released just last month. Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague Ave. 8 p.m. $30.
Foo Fighters – The last time the Dave Grohl-fronted rock band played regionally, it was a whopping four weeks ago in Walla Walla. They return this weekend to the Gorge, and hopefully Grohl’s broken leg has healed since then. The Gorge Amphitheater, 754 Silica Road, George, Washington. 8 p.m. $47-$75.
Sir Mix-A-Lot – The Seattle-based rapper, best known for his enduring novelty hit “Baby Got Back,” headlines this weekend’s Perry Street Shakedown. Other acts on Saturday include Bandit Train at 2 p.m., B-Radicals at 4 and Milonga at 6. And the three-day event is free, which might be the best part. 1011 S. Perry St. 9 p.m.
The Round #11 – The Bartlett continues its monthly Round series, with featured musicians Planes on Paper, Lucas Brown and Josh Hedlund. They’ll be joined by poet Anastasia Aguon and visual artist Isaac Grambo. The Bartlett, 228 W. Sprague Ave. 8 p.m. $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
“Weird Al” Yankovic – The long-running, Grammy-winning song satirist behind “Amish Paradise” and “Eat It” comes to town on the heels of his first No. 1 album, “Mandatory Fun.” Expect a high-energy show with plenty of accordion. Northern Quest Resort and Casino, 100 N. Hayford Road, Airway Heights, 7:30 p.m. $35-$45.
John Hiatt and the Combo – He’s never had a mainstream hit, but everyone from Bob Dylan to Joe Cocker to Paula Abdul have covered songs by this influential Americana songwriter. Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague Ave. 8 p.m. $32.50.
Lee Brice – Along with 11 No. 1 singles to his own name, country singer-songwriter Brice has also written popular tunes for Garth Brooks, Eli Young and Tim McGraw. His song “Love Like Crazy” also holds the record for longest-charting single in the history of the country charts. Coeur d’Alene Casino, 37914 South Nukwaqw, Worley. 7 p.m. $50-$60.
• And here’s what’s happening musicwise on the grandstand stage at the Spokane Interstate Fair, 404 N. Havana St.
Monday: Soft rock duo Air Supply scored big hits in the ’70s and ’80s with “All Out of Love,” “The One That You Love,” “Lost in Love” and “Making Love Out of Nothing at All.” Sense a pattern? 7 p.m. $20-$30.
Tuesday: Craig Morgan has racked up several successful country albums since embarking on a music career in the early 2000s, and he’ll be sharing the stage with country newcomers Dan + Shay. 6:45 p.m. $25-$35.
Wednesday: Although the band originates from Canada, the Guess Who is probably best known for its 1970 single “American Woman.” Other hits include “These Eyes” and “No Time.” 6:45 p.m. $15-$25.
Thursday: Cheap Trick was perhaps the most influential American power pop group of the ’70s, knocking out hits like “Surrender,” “Dream Police” and “I Want You to Want Me.” This will likely be a great way to close out the fair. 7 p.m. $20-$30.
