Area roundup: Washington State still winless in Pac-12

The Washington State volleyball team dropped to 0-6 in the Pac-12 Conference with a four-set loss to Oregon State on Saturday at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Oregon. Scores were 24-26, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-20.

Jaicee Harris had a season-best 18 kills and added 14 digs. Harris moved into eighth place in school history with 1,067 career kills.

Mary-Kate Marshall led four Beavers (13-4, 3-3) in double figures with 14 kills.

Haley McDonald added 50 assists and 10 digs for the Cougars (9-9), who will play at Arizona in a nonconference match on Friday.

• Cheyne Corrado had 15 kills and seven digs and Portland State (5-13, 3-3) swept Eastern Washington (6-12, 2-4) in a Big Sky Conference match in Portland, Oregon. Scores were 25-15, 25-14 and 25-19.

• Alyssa Schultz and Katelyn Peterson led a balanced attack with 10 kills apiece and Idaho (8-10, 4-2) swept Sacramento State (5-16, 0-6) in a Big Sky Conference match in Sacramento, California. Scores were 25-23, 25-22 and 25-14. The Vandals’ Meredith Coba dished out 36 assists and Stephanie Hagins chipped in nine kills.

• Nicole Leonard had 18 kills and 16 digs and Whitworth (13-5, 6-2) beat Lewis & Clark (8-9, 2-6) in four sets in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane. Scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19.

The win was the Pirates’ sixth in their past seven matches.

Whitworth’s Cassandra Mendoza added 13 kills and 11 digs and Maddye Dinsmore dished out 44 assists.

• Jenna Widman and Korrie Stephenson had 12 kills apiece and Community Colleges of Spokane made quick work of Yakima Valley, beating the Yaks (5-10, 3-3) in straight sets in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Yakima. Scores were 25-20, 25-12 and 25-17.

Emily Russell handed out 24 assists and Lizzy Ridley and Siera English combined for 28 digs for the Sasquatch (20-11, 5-2).

Women’s soccer

Elena Medeiros and Michele Murphy scored 3 minutes apart early in the second half and No. 23 BYU blanked Gonzaga (8-6, 3-1) 2-0 in a West Coast Conference match in Provo, Utah.

The Cougars (9-3-2, 3-0) held a commanding 23-9 shot advantage.

• Cassidy Skillings’ 47th-minute goal was the difference in George Fox’s 1-0 Northwest Conference win over Whitworth in Newberg, Oregon. The Pirates fell to 3-8-1 overall and 2-6 in conference matches. George Fox improved to 1-7-3 and 1-5-1.

• Jaimee Hulst scored off a rebound in the 48th minute and North Idaho (6-2-7, 5-2-6) held on to beat Walla Walla 1-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Walla Walla.

The winning goal came after Jasmine Smith’s shot was deflected back into play after being tipped by Walla Walla (4-6-5, 4-4-5) keeper Annika Enloe.

• Sarah Melvin and Makenzie Welch scored first-half goals and Community Colleges of Spokane beat Treasure Valley (13-3, 10-3) 2-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Hannah Sanders and Rashelle Fisher assisted on the goals. Neither team scored after halftime.

It was the seventh straight win for the Sasquatch (15-2-1, 11-1-1).

Men’s soccer

Alex Opland’s goal in the 61st minute was the difference in Community Colleges of Spokane’s 1-0 Northwest Athletic Conference win over Treasure Valley (5-8-2, 3-6-2) at Spokane Falls Community College. CCS (9-7, 7-4) keeper Damian Ruiz recorded the shutout.

• Walla Walla scored twice in the first 14 minutes and the Warriors (8-4-3, 7-3-1) went on to beat North Idaho 3-1 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Walla Walla.

Walla Walla’s Ricardo Saldana scored in the fifth minute and Vincente Flores made it 2-0 with his 14th-minute goal.

NIC’s Adam Talley cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 29th minute, but the Cardinals (11-1-2, 9-1-1) couldn’t add any more.

Junior hockey

Nelson scored two third-period goals and the Leafs (6-2-2-1) topped the Spokane Braves (4-5-0-3) 3-1 in a KIJHL game in Nelson, B.C. Jake Toporowski scored Spokane’s lone goal late in the third period.
