Obituary: Schott, Warren Edward

SCHOTT, Warren Edward Warren Edward Schott died peacefully at Hospice House of Spokane on May 19, 2014.

He was born January 11, 1918 in Cleveland, OH to Martin and Dorothy Schott and was the older brother to Robert.

Warren grew up in Cleveland until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1935, during the height of the Depression.

Following basic training at Norfolk, Virginia, he was stationed in California, first at San Diego Naval Station and then San Pedro Naval Station.

He met his future wife, Betty Forest, a 1935 graduate of North Central high school, Spokane, on a blind date on the 4th of July, 1936.

Warren and Betty were married on April 2, 1938.

They celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary in April of this year.

In the spring of 1939, Warren was assigned to Ford Island, Hawaii, the Naval Air Station inside Pearl Harbor.

At the time, he was a first class petty officer in charge of small boat repair.

Warren and Betty were living in military housing on Ford Island at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) and are Pearl Harbor Survivors.

In May of 1942, Betty returned by ship to the mainland (Warren was on the same ship).

They traveled to Norfolk, VA where Warren attended a diesel engine program.

Following completion, he was assigned to a ship serving in the Pacific including Australia and Okinawa.

At that time, Betty moved to Cleveland to stay with Warren’s parents where their first son, Warren Jr. (Skip) was born.

In the spring of 1943, Betty and infant son returned to Spokane.

Warren was honorably discharged in January of 1946 as a Chief Warrant Officer.

Warren joined Betty and young son, Skip, and settled in the Spokane Valley.

They welcomed Robert Jon to the family in November of 1946.

In 1949 Warren built the home where they still live today.

Warren was employed by the Navy Supply Depot (Spokane Valley) until it moved to California.

He also worked for the Corp of Engineers, the Atlas Missile program and the General Services Administration (GSA) until he retired in 1973, at the age of 55.

Warren and his family were very active on the crew of the Miss Spokane hydroplane during the 1960’s.

In September of 2011, Warren and Betty accompanied by their son, Bob, joined other World War II veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Warren Schott and wife, Betty, were charter members of the national Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Lilac City Chapter.

Warren was always willing to help anyone at any time.

Friends remember him teaching them how to change oil in their cars, provide information when purchasing snow tires, and teaching at least 10 nuns to drive.

Warren was usually the second person to drive anyone’s new car.

He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Warren is survived by his wife, Betty of 76 years, and their sons, Warren (Skip) Jr. and wife, Karin of Snohomish, WA and Bob and wife Kathy of Bainbridge Island, WA.

He has two granddaughters, Mary Schott Cowie, Bainbridge Island, WA and Ann Schott, Portland, OR and one great granddaughter Alice Cowie; Bainbridge Island, WA.

; niece, Linda (Leroy) Clarke of Santa Fe, NM, nephew Roy Schott, Phoenix, AZ.

and grandnieces, Cynthia Vaughn, Hot Springs, AR, and Laura Clarke, Reno, NV and grandnephew, Christopher Clarke, Dallas TX.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014.
