6 “This Sporting Life” 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Downtown Library, 906 W. Main Ave. Richard Harris stars and Lindsay Anderson directs this 1963 drama about a tough, ambitious coal miner recruited to play for the local rugby team. 7 “A History of Violence: An Evening with Steven Pinker” 7 p.m. Thursday, INB Performing Arts Center, 334 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. One of the world’s leading cognitive scientists, Pinker translates his groundbreaking research into articles and books that are accessible to the general reader: “The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence has Declined,” “The Blank Slate” and “How the Mind Works.” Pinker’s appearance is sponsored by the Daniel and Margaret Carper Foundation Lecture Series and Eastern Washington University.
