Conan O’Brien says if he was in Jay Leno’s shoes, he wouldn’t have taken back the “Tonight Show” less than a year after handing it off to someone else.

“That’s me, you know,” O’Brien says an interview airing on “60 Minutes” Sunday – the day after he can start appearing on TV again, under his exit agreement with NBC.

“Everyone’s got their own way … of doing things.”

O’Brien, who will launch a new talk show on TBS in November, took over “Tonight” last year, with Leno moving to a new 10 p.m. show.

But after both flopped in the ratings, NBC returned Leno to late night and O’Brien refused the network’s offer to do a show following that.

He says he left NBC thinking “this relationship is going to be toxic and maybe we just need to go our separate ways.”

Stupid human tricks

David Letterman says the scandal surrounding his workplace affairs initially “knocked him down” and left him depressed, but now he’s putting his life back together.

On Friday’s “Live! With Regis and Kelly,” the CBS “Late Show” host said his sexual relationships with female co-workers were stupid and reckless, but sounded hopeful that life with his wife and young son can “even be better, in a different way.”
