Bride Wars

•1/2 So how bad can a movie with Goldilocks (Kate) Hudson and Cinderella (Anne) Hathaway be? So excruciating that Hudson’s sunshine can’t warm it and Hathaway’s rose redolence can’t mask its stink. This one about the best buds turned mortal enemies when their weddings are accidentally booked the same day is the rotten – and possibly poisoned - apple of fairytale movies. Running time: 1:30

Rating: PG (language, rude behavior, suggestive content) Garland: 5:50.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

••• Brad Pitt stars as a man who ages backward, beginning in 1918 and heading into the 21st century. An epic Gumpian yarn, with Cate Blanchett as the love of his life, and fine turns from Taraji P. Henson and Tilda Swinton. Running time: 2:47

The Haunting in Connecticut

•• Tepid ghost story with fine performances by Kyle Gallner as a teen with cancer who sees dead people and Virginia Madsen as his protective mom. Wait to rent this one on DVD as part of a triple feature with 1979’s “The Amityville Horror” and its 2005 remake. Running time: 1:32

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

•• Like one of those Pixie Sticks periodically sipped by its hypoglycemic hero – a pudgeball on a Segway, played by Kevin James – to boost his blood sugar, the film lacks nutritional value but makes you giddy. Completely forgettable, frequently funny and weirdly satisfying in a loser-gets-respect kind of way. Running time: 1:31

Rating: PG (language, crude humor, violence) Garland: 7:45.

Race to Witch Mountain

•• Dwayne Johnson (aka “The Rock”) stars in this cartoonish remake of the 1975 Disney film “Escape to Witch Mountain.” He’s a Vegas cabbie roped into helping two very human-looking teen aliens. Leave your brain at the concession stand. Running time: 1:39

Sunshine Cleaning

Taken

••• Liam Neeson makes a surprisingly good action hero an ex-covert op who comes to the rescue of his teenage daughter when she and a friend are abducted by sex traffickers in Paris. Wild chases and martial arts mayhem ensue in this brisk, no-nonsense thriller. Running time: 1:31

Rating: PG-13 (violence, language, sexual content, drug references) River Park Square: 10:35 a.m., 12:55, 3:10, 5:30, 7:40, 9:55. Riverstone: 7:35, 9:55. Village Centre: 11:15 a.m., 1:15, 6:15.

Watchmen

••• A fanboy’s fantasy come true, Zack (“300”) Snyder’s reverent adaptation of the lauded graphic novel offers a violent, subversive take on superhero mythology. Set in an alternate 1985, with costumed crimefighters acting cranky and weird, the movie, like the comic, is about power and history – its making, and its reimagining. Running time: 2:43

Rating: R (language, nudity, sexuality, graphic violence) River Park Square: 11:05 a.m., 3, 6:20, 9:40. Village Centre: 3:15, 8:15.
