In brief: Waste facilities change hours

The Spokane Regional Solid Waste System Recycling Centers/Transfer Stations and the Waste to Energy Facility/Recycling Center will return to regular hours on Oct. 1.

All facilities will be open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Extended hours will resume on April 1, 2008.

Beginning Oct, 1, clean green will be accepted during all hours at the reduced rate:

– The first 100 pounds are free.

– Amounts over the first 100 pounds are charged at 35 cents per 20 pounds.

The Spokane Regional Solid Waste System provides one-stop drop sites for recyclables, household hazardous waste, garbage and yard debris at the following locations:

The North County Recycling/Transfer Station, 22123 Elk-Chattaroy Road; Valley Recycling/Transfer Station, 3941 N. Sullivan Road; Waste to Energy Facility/Recycling Center, 2900 S. Geiger Blvd.

Lilac scholarships will be discussed

Spokane County high school senior girls are invited to speak with their advisors at school to learn about the process to apply for the Spokane Lilac Festival Royalty Scholarship Program.

Girls must have a 3.0 grade point average and will receive scholarships if selected to the court.

Seven girls will be selected to serve as Lilac Royalty and will be expected to make appearances throughout the Northwest during the spring and summer of 2008.

There will be an orientation Wednesday at the Tomlinson Building at the corner of Thurston and Regal at 5:30 p.m., or at the same location Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
