Locally: Haworth named EWU interim tennis coach

Darren Haworth has been named the men’s and women’s interim head tennis coach at Eastern Washington University after serving as an assistant coach this past year.

Prior to arriving at EWU in 2006, Haworth served as the men’s head coach and director of tennis at Fresno City College.

Haworth replaces Patrick Dreves, who resigned in order to spend more time with his family, act as the director of junior development at the Spokane Athletic Club and serve as an assistant men’s and women’s coach at Whitworth College, his alma mater.

Awards

Six local track and field student-athletes attending Eastern Washington University were named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for the spring quarter.

To qualify for the team, student-athletes must earn a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and participate in at least half of the team’s competitions.

Spring BSC All-Academic selections: Chad Butorac (Northport High School), Jordan Oswald (Cheney), Erik Walter (Odessa), Megan Como (East Valley), Teanna Meinhold (Colville) and Bonnie Millard (Priest River).

College scene

Lewis and Clark High wrestler Anthony Varnell, this year’s State 4A champion at 140 pounds, signed a letter of intent to compete for NJCAA Northwest College of Powell, Wyo.

Tennis

The Spokane Athletic Club, competing in the men’s 3.5 division, was eliminated from the United States Tennis Association Senior League Section Championships in Sunriver, Ore., after falling 2-1 to Harbor Square Athletic Club of Edmonds, Wash., on June 23.

Spokane beat Courthouse Athletic Club of Salem, Ore., 2-1 on June 21 and then lost to Bally’s Tennis of Olympia 2-1 the next day before being eliminated.

Volleyball

Former Eastern Washington University standout Brittney Page will join Cajasur de Cordoba, a professional team in Cordoba, Spain, later this summer.

Page, a Big Sky Conference first-team selection last fall, will be among three former NCAA Division I players to join the team.

Cajasur de Cordoba’s season begins Oct. 13.

Miscellany

Bud Riley, a member of the North Idaho Sports Hall of Fame and former football coach at the University of Idaho, will be honored at the Wallace Eagles Lodge at 6 p.m. on July 21.

Riley, whose son is Oregon State University football coach Mike Riley, coached football at Wallace High School from 1952-58.
