Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was apparently knocked momentarily unconscious and left Sunday’s game in Atlanta after being hit by three Falcons defenders while throwing a pass in the third quarter.

Roethlisberger appeared to receive a helmet-to-helmet hit in the face mask from defensive end Chauncey Davis immediately after releasing the pass, which was dropped by Hines Ward with 7:40 left in the third. Defensive end Patrick Kerney and linebacker Ed Hartwell also hit the quarterback on the play.

Roethlisberger was face down and motionless for several minutes before being rolled onto his back by trainers.

Roethlisberger finally was able to sit up and then walk off the field with the assistance of the trainers.

He returned to the sideline late in the game wearing street clothes and a black cap. There was no immediate report on his injury.

Green progressing but not yet ready to play

Trent Green figures mid- to late-November is the earliest he’ll be under center for the Kansas City Chiefs.

In his journey back from the vicious head-snapping hit that left him unconscious with a severe concussion, the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback is taking it one step at a time.

For the first time since he was carried off the field Sept. 10, he’s been cleared to begin team activities. If all goes well this week and he gets the green light from the neurosurgeon he consults almost daily, he’ll progress to heavier team work next week.

Manning and Harrison move up lists

Colts receiver Marvin Harrison and two-time MVP Peyton Manning continued moving up their respective career lists against Washington in Indianapolis.

Harrison passed Irving Fryar for eighth on the NFL’s yards receiving list, while Manning cracked the top 10 in touchdown passes.

Harrison passed Fryar with his second catch of the day, giving him 12,786 yards, one more than Fryar.

Manning, who threw one TD pass in the first half, opened the second half with three more – two to Harrison and another to Reggie Wayne. The nine-year veteran now has 256 career TD passes, passing Dan Fouts (254) and Sonny Jurgensen (255) for 10th all-time.

Manning also passed Jim Hart for 14th on the career yardage list. He entered the game with 34,467 yards. Hart had 34,665.

Traffic accident sidelines Colts’ lineman

Indianapolis defensive tackle Montae Reagor was hospitalized with a head wound after his sport-utility vehicle collided with another vehicle and flipped onto its roof while he was en route to the Colts’ game against the Washington Redskins in Indianapolis, police said.

Reagor was declared inactive and the team said he was at Methodist Hospital with two team doctors.
