Waggoner captures Esmeralda Amateur

Tim Waggoner won a putt-off with Aaron Biel to capture the championship of the 2006 Coca-Cola Esmeralda Amateur golf tournament that wound up Monday.

Waggoner and Biel completed the 54-hole event at 8-under-par 202, a five-shot margin over Bill Hainline.

The event is the second qualifier in the Toyota Series of Golf. Waggoner and the flight net leaders – Hainline (201, championship), Dean Duren (204, first after a playoff with Art Dibble) and Warren Olson (190, second) – advance to the season-ending Sterling Savings Bank Shoot-Out Sept. 25 at The Highlands Golf Course.

Baseball

Jessie Mier and Matt Vogel each hit three-run home runs in a seven-run fourth inning that propelled top-ranked Lewis-Clark State past Concordia (Calif.) 17-2 in a loser-out game at the NAIA World Series in Lewiston.

The Warriors (44-8) face another elimination game today against No. 1 seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) (49-14) at 3 p.m. Embry-Riddle lost 7-2 to No. 4 seed Cumberland (Tenn.) in a winner’s bracket semifinal.

In another loser-out game, Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) beat Bellevue (Neb.) 7-6 in 10 innings.

In the other winner’s bracket game, No. 2 British Columbia whipped Lubbock Christian (Texas) 23-5.

Allen Balmer had a five-hit game to highlight a 19-hit LC State attack that included five for extra bases, including Juan Verdejo’s three-run homer in a five-run ninth inning. Mier finished with four RBIs, adding a run-scoring single in the fifth.
