University stays part of three-way tie

The Spokesman-Review

When University defeated visiting Shadle Park 59-41 in Greater Spokane League girls basketball on Tuesday night, nothing changed among the top six teams jockeying for 4A District playoff spots.

The Titans (15-3, 10-1) remain part of a three-way tie for first place with Gonzaga Prep (16-2, 10-1) and Lewis and Clark (17-1, 10-1).

The Highlanders (10-8, 5-6) share fifth place in the league with Mt. Spokane and Ferris (both 8-10, 5-6). Two league games remain, including Mt. Spokane at Shadle on Tuesday.

U-Hi received 16 rebounds and three steals by Dara Zack and used an 18-8 fourth-quarter advantage to hold off the Highlanders.

The Titans jumped to an early 14-5 lead and were up by 11 points at halftime. But Shadle kept within striking distance through three quarters before the host team pulled away.

Angie Bjorklund scored 24 points for U-Hi, while Tonya Schnibbe dished off 10 assists and had three steals.

Lexi Bishop and Lexie Petterson combined for 32 of Shadle’s 41 points.

CV 66, Mt. Spokane 51

The host Wildcats could not contain CV point guard Justine Bowman or league scoring leader Heidi Heintz in losing a game pivotal to their playoff hopes. The duo led the Bears (11-7, 7-4) with 15 and 24 points, respectively. Heintz finished 8 of 9 from the field and 8 for 8 from the free-throw line. Mt. Spokane’s Charlee Jackson was 7 for 9 from the field and finished with 19 points.

East Valley 59, Cheney 51

The visiting Knights (8-10, 4-7) took a step toward locking up the No. 2 3A district seed. They broke a 40-all tie with a seven-point, fourth-quarter start and hit free throws down the stretch, making 13 of 18 overall. EV’s Kelsey Hentges finished 7 for 8 from the line and had 19 points to share game high with Katie Camp of the Blackhawks (6-12, 2-9).

LC 72, Clarkston 33

The Tigers hit 60 percent of their first-half shots (21 for 35) to lead 49-17 and coasted past the host Bantams (10-8, 6-5). Heather Bowman scored 24 points, one of three LC players in double figures. Lyndi Seidensticker added 15 points as she and Jade Peone each made two 3-pointers. The Bantams were led by season-long scoring leader Misty Atkinson, who scored 12.

G-Prep 68, West Valley 28

The slow-starting Bullpups turned it on with a 29-5 burst in the first half en route to an easy win at WV (3-15, 2-9). Three Gonzapa Prep players finished in double figures. Tara Cronin led with 18. Krystal McCarthy had 11 points for the Eagles.

In her first game back after missing two with a head injury, Nikki Nelson scored 19 points and had four steals for the Panthers (14-4, 9-2). Visiting Ferris (8-10, 5-6) was led by Jenna Galloway’s 16 points.

North Central 58, Rogers 53
