Spokane-Area Students Receive WSU Scholarships

Three Spokane-area students recently received scholarships from Washington State University:

Jason Grimes, a 1993 University High School graduate, received a $750 David Schrader Scholarship from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is the son of Cindy and Ray Grimes.

Patrick Nelson, a 1995 Mead High School graduate, received a $750 David Fox Scholarship from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is the son of Penny and John Nelson.

Terrese Miller, a 1995 graduate of Shadle Park High School, received a $500 Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Scholarship. She is the daughter of Linda and David Miller.

The Inland Northwest Car Club Scholarship Fund awarded $500 scholarships to 10 area students:

Jennifer Johnson, Nicholas Earling, Michael Woodward, Lori Stose, Hazen Audel and Michael Bevacqua, all of Spokane; Jason Bishop, Edwall, Wash.; Brett Bly, Davenport, Wash.; Mark Paulus, Mead; and Molly Defreese, Colbert.

Ronald Denning, stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., was promoted to sergeant in the Marine Corps.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Denning, Greenacres, and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Blocker, Spokane

Jillene Beach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Beach, has been selected to appear in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Beach is a student at Eastern Washington University.

Jim Hunt volunteered with the Jimmy Carter Work Project this summer, sponsored by Habitat for Humanity.

More than 2,000 volunteers from around the world built 50 houses during the week-long event in seven Appalachian communities.

“Hammering in the Hills” was a joint Appalachian building project resulting in new houses for 150 needy people.

Kathleen Greco and Cindi Durgan have been named to the board of directors of the Junior Achievement of the Inland Northwest.

The group’s elected officers for the 1997-98 year are: Brian McNaughton, chairman; Colleen Brandon, executive vice chairwoman; and department heads Midge Moore, Gary Lorentzen, Chris Carothers, Craig Korthase, Candice Payne, Gordon Budke and Sharon Matthews, past chairwoman.

Nancy Ross, marketing director for Group Health Northwest, received the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition from Spokane Rotary 21.

The award is one of the highest awards given by Rotary.

Ross was recognized for her donations to the 3H project - health, hunger and humanity - which provides assistance to people on an international level.

Sara Clements, a student at Mead High School, was selected to attend the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program in Washington, D.C. She was one of 200 high school juniors and seniors to meet with government leaders and learn about the democratic process firsthand.

Kathryn Brattebo was among the top five percent of women participants in a 1-1/2-mile run and the physical fitness test during the Air Force ROTC field training last spring at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida.

She received the Fleetwood Award and the Athletic Award for those achievements.

Brattebo, a 1995 graduate of West Valley High School, is a nursing student at the University of Portland. She is the daughter of Tom and Bette Brattebo.

Winners from the Spokane Transit Authority’s “Roadeo” last summer are:

Fixed Route: David Losey, first place; Gabe Fernos, second; and Vern Mullet, third.

Paratransit category: Juan Villa, first; John “Scotty” Mundy, second; and Kathy Cortez, third.

Barbara Park, Veradale, was installed as second vice-president of the state chapter of Philanthropic and Educational Organization Sisterhood at the state convention in Tacoma.
