Ten years ago:U.S. Rep. Patricia Schroeder, D-Colo., announced in Denver that she would not run for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Five years ago: Aides to President Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton met in Dallas with supporters of Ross Perot, who hinted afterward he might re-enter the presidential race. A Pakistani jetliner crashed in Nepal, killing all 167 people aboard.

One year ago: With the United States abstaining, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution indirectly calling on Israel to close an archaeological tunnel in Jerusalem that had touched off fighting between Israelis and Palestinians. Landmark legislation to crack down on illegal immigrants in the United States won House passage.
