Jean Brust, one of the founding members of the Socialist Workers Party, died Monday of an apparent stroke. She was 76. Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, who led Malawi to independence in 1964 and then ruled it with a combination of caustic with, eccentricity and cruelty for 30 years, died Tuesday night in Johannesburg, South Africa. There is no record of his birth date, but the clinic gave his age as 99.

Marguerite Henry, the award-winning author whose books such as “Misty of Chincoteague” swept young readers into a land of wild horses and rugged landscapes, died Wednesday. She was 95.

The French singer and songwriter known simply as Barbara, who earned a huge following in the French-speaking world for her melancholic lyrics and melodies, died on Monday in the American Hospital in Paris. She was 67.

Decisions

President Clinton and Pacific Rim leaders approved a rescue strategy Tuesday for shaken Asian economies and also added Russia, Vietnam and Peru to the 18-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group.

Monday: Child custody hearing in Upland, Calif., for mother whose two younger children wandered out of the family home and onto some nearby railroad tracks where they were killed by a commuter train.
