Ducks Romp Past WSU; Huskies Hang On

From Staff And Wire Reports

College women

Arianne Boyer and Renae Fegent combined for 31 points in leading the Oregon Ducks past visiting Washington State 80-46 in a women’s Pacific-10 Conference basketball game Thursday night before 2,207 fans at McArthur Court in Eugene.

Boyer scored a game-high 16 as Oregon improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10 play. Fegent added 15 points and Sonja Curtis chipped in 13 for the Ducks, who outrebounded the Cougars 50-30. Curtis led the Ducks with eight rebounds, while Mendy Benson and Boyer each grabbed seven boards.

Amy Saneholtz led the Cougars (5-6, 0-3) with 11 points, while Laura Wilder led all rebounders with 10. The loss was WSU’s fourth straight.

“We couldn’t make our shots,” said Cougars coach Harold Rhodes as his club dropped its fourth straight game in Eugene. WSU shot a season-low 29.3 percent, including just 8 of 30 in the second half.

In WSU’s three league losses, the Cougars have been outrebounded 132-93.

“We played hard, but we didn’t compete. There is a difference,” Rhodes said.

The Cougars stayed close for the first 5 minutes, trailing 10-7 when the Ducks went on a 15-3 run that produced a 25-10 lead WSU couldn’t overcome. The Ducks finished the half with a 9-2 run to take a 38-20 lead into the locker room.

Oregon’s depth and decided height advantage wore down the Cougars in the final half. Eight minutes into the second half, Oregon opened a 24-point lead, 56-32 on a basket by Boyer. Two minutes later and 21 points in front of WSU, the Ducks ran off 12 unanswered points, including 3-point baskets by Benson and Betty Ann Boeving.

WSU closes out its road trip to Oregon Saturday with a 7 p.m. game at Oregon State.
