The Slice Give Us Your Best Shot

We know they’re out there - snapshots of families taken at the “Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies” sculpture overlooking the Columbia River.

How about letting us borrow yours? We want to print a few.

The case for taking long walks: So this little boy stopped us on a Browne’s Addition sidewalk. He held up a picture book about animals. We examined the volume and pronounced it a valuable reference work. Then we pointed to a photo of a striped big cat and asked the boy to identify it. “Teeger,” he said.

Close enough.

Slice answer: “We returned from a month-long trip to the Catskill Mountains in New York after an allday flight and arrived home at approximately 10 p.m. PST,” wrote Brenda Zehm. “I unloaded all the suitcases directly into the laundry baskets, filled the washer and started it. Then, totally exhausted, I finally went to bed. I knew that I would not be able to rest until I had at least started one load of laundry.”

Few sounds are worse than: Strained, insincere laughter.

Name density at two Safeways: We’re told that at the Northwest Boulevard store, they have three Kevins, three Debbies, two Joes, two Daves, two Rons, two Jerrys and two Tammys. And at Mission and Hamilton, they have six Mikes.

Stompin’ on channel 7: We always had trouble with Steve Allen playing the title role in 1955’s “The Benny Goodman Story,” on KSPS-TV tonight at 8. But if you don’t mind a little corn and enjoy big band music, you might want to check it out.

Slice answer: A reader in Post Falls wrote that people who say “autumn” are under the influence of Martha Stewart or L.L. Bean while those who say “fall” enjoy mental health.

Warm-up questions: How can you tell a child is ready to stay home alone? When driving, do you ever suspect attitude-exuding jaywalkers are daring you to hit them? At any given time, what percentage of Inland Northwesterners are trying to land jobs in Seattle or Portland? Can neighbors be friends if their pets don’t get along? Who is the most easily offended person in Spokane?

Today’s Slice question: Should the presence of ambulances at football games prompt society to ask “What’s wrong with this picture?”
