Darcy Sohns West Valley Year: Junior Sport: Softball Position: Pitcher

Not long ago, a West Valley head coach was walking to his team’s practice field when he passed the Eagles’ softball team.

On the mound on the cold and windy day was Darcy Sohns, the Eagles’ junior pitcher, sweating up a storm as she delivered pitches to catcher Jennifer Robinson.

“Man, I need to bring my team over here so they can see what hard work really is. She’s like that every day,” the coach said.

When informed of the remark, Sohns said: “I think it’s part of my determination. I’ve always wanted to be the best, and whatever team I play on, I want it to be the best.”

Sohns finished 13-0 with one save, posted a 0.45 earned-run average and helped WV to another Frontier League title. If athlete of the year awards were distributed, she’d clearly be in the running for such an honor.

But Sohns is more concerned about helping her team win this week’s district tournament at Medical Lake.

A state berth is on the line.

“The mindset and attitude of this team right now is where it was before the season even started,” Sohns said.

“Everybody is just real focused and wants to win.” , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Photo
