UI Golf Team Ties For Eighth

The Idaho Vandals men’s golf team finished tied for eighth at the Grand Canyon/Oak Craft Fall Classic in Sun City West, Arizona with a three-round team total of 904.

“We played better,” said coach Dan Koesters. “We made a lot fewer mental mistakes. We’re still throwing away too many shots, but our kids adapted to a tough course.

“We beat a couple of teams that are supposed to be a lot better than us. Our guys just out-thought them,” he said.

Clarkston native and true freshman Neil Schnider was Idaho’s top finisher, taking 15th place in his first collegiate tournament.

“I was real excited about his play,” said Koesters. “I was a bit surprised, especially for his first tournament. He’s pretty emotional, but he kept everything together and did a great job. He’s really been working hard.”

Utah State (885), Long Beach State University (887), and University of Texas-Pan America (888) took the top three positions.

Vandals following behind Schnider were Jason Hicks, tying for 21st (225), and J.T. Jones tying for 35th (228).
