Lc, Ferris Nail District Soccer Wins

After turning its only shot on goal into a game-tying score, Lewis and Clark threw the Just A Kick District 8-AAA soccer playoffs into a scramble Thursday with a 2-1 shootout victory over Gonzaga Prep.

Lewis and Clark’s win at Prep lifted the fifth-seeded Tigers (10-7) into a second-round match against Ferris, which tripped University 4-2 at Ferris.

The losers were eliminated. LC and Ferris (14-3) will square off in a loser-out match Monday at Ferris. The winner will play Mead (16-0), the Greater Spokane League’s round-robin champion, on Wednesday for state-tournament seeding purposes.

Second-seeded Gonzaga Prep (13-4), which dominated play, and Lewis and Clark carried a scoreless battle well into the second half before Prep’s Rebecca Santos broke the ice with a free kick at the 63-minute mark. By then, the Bullpups had lost their starting forwards, Marissa Jenkins and Daniella Mirabell, with knee injuries.

LC’s Sara Giebel tied the match with a penalty kick 7 minutes later.

Two scoreless overtime periods followed before LC took the shootout 3-0 on kicks from Giebel, Jessica Dinneen and Brook Fredrickson.

By comparison, third-seeded Ferris won in routine fashion.

Tied with University (9-8) after 70 minutes, the Saxons ripped off the winning goals in the next 9 minutes.

Mariah McConnaughey put in the tiebreaker on a feed from Stacia Palladino at 75 minutes. Megan Cummings headed in the clincher.
