The Slice Remember, All Seven Words Must Be Printable In The Paper

Everything must go. We’re clearing out our supply of Slice T-shirts. And we’re going to give away all that we have left in one big blowout. It’s The Slice’s Seven Words of Summer Contest. We’re talking lots of winners.

All you’ve got to do is pick the seven words that, to you, best define summer in the Inland Northwest. For instance…canteen, chlorine, Dick’s, jiggle, shuttlecock, rerun, ticks. (We know you can do better than that.)

Judges will look for variety.

Entries should be in writing and must arrive at Slice Headquarters by 5 p.m., June 2. Good luck.

Slice answer: “A true blue Bob Dylan fan is one who can take a phrase someone uses in conversation, a phrase which is from a Dylan song - though the speaker may not know it’s from a Dylan quote - and respond quickly with the follow-up line from the same song,” wrote Steve Ringo.

Here’s how Sherry Porter answered the question about why readers would still be living in this area 10 years from now: “I was away from here for exactly 10 years because I couldn’t stand the small town mentality, the quietness and family oriented safe life here. Swore I’d never come back. Four years ago, I couldn’t wait to get back to that safe, small town…In 10 years, I’ll probably be here and my kids will be the ones running away.”

Real life: Spokane’s Leah Pruitt passed along a story involving her 5-year-old daughter and a burst of flatulence. She allowed that it might not be a category of responses we want to encourage. She did suggest, however, that it could be a way to help Slice readers who had objected to the recent vomiting stories realize that things can always get worse.

And Chewelah’s Joan Hermanson wonders if anyone else adds to household clutter by clipping out every magazine and newspaper story about reducing household clutter.

Today’s Slice question: What is the local record for getting the most summers out of one swimsuit?
