Moore’s No-Hitter Highlights Big Day For Pitchers

The pitchers were definitely ahead of the hitters on Day 2 of the Greater Spokane League girls softball season Friday.

At Rogers, the Pirates’ Traci Moore pitched a no-hitter, but was victimized by a couple of walks and four Rogers errors in a 9-2 triumph over Central Valley.

At Gonzaga Prep, North Central’s Denise Devereaux and Prep’s Stevie Palmer hooked up in an eight-inning duel won by the visiting Indians, 1-0.

And at Shadle Park, Mead’s Holly Vanwert and Holly Turner combined on a one-hitter to upstage Highlander sophomore Becky Alberts, who pitched a two-hitter, as the Panthers prevailed 5-2.

In the other game, University joined Mead at 2-0 with a 12-2, five-inning pounding of Ferris (0-2).

It was the season-opener for the other five.

Moore struck out eight, but two of them came around to score after getting aboard when the catcher couldn’t hold onto the ball.

Jaime Christensen had a two-run triple in the second inning to get Rogers started. The Pirates added six runs in the sixth by parlaying two hits with four CV errors.

Roxy Divine’s one-out RBI single in the top of the first extra inning drove in Tera Young, who got aboard on an error, to provide NC’s victory over the Bullpups. Devereaux allowed four hits and struck out nine. Palmer pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven. Both walked two.

A fifth-inning single off Turner broke up Mead’s no-hit bid and produced Shadle’s run. Vanwert, who struck out 10 in four innings, had an RBI double in a three-run Mead first inning .

Toshua Ballou’s three-run triple highlighted a five-run second for U-Hi.
