The Slice Mabye Seattle Just Gives Us An Inferiority Complex

Face it. A LOT of American cities would seem sort of square if they were in the same state as Seattle.

But we prefer to think of Spokane as unpretentious.

No comment: “Spoils system” and “Sponge” are The World Book Encyclopedia subject headings on either side of the “Spokane” entry.

Sorry, wrong number: Scott R. Bailey could be excused for suspecting that the Swell Paper’s readers are a tad slow on the uptake. He has a phone number that is close to one here at The SpokesmanReview. And even though his answering machine messages tend to be outlandish - for instance, one recent message was in French and another featured a guttural scream - people still leave their newspaperrelated complaints, account numbers, et cetera on his machine. “It’s really pretty absurd,” he said.

Alice Arthur almost got mugged: She was driving on Freya when a guy pulled out of a gas station into traffic next to her. And he turned so sharply that the coffee mug on his dashboard went flying out of his window and narrowly missed Arthur’s car.

Local interest: If you never saw the 1991 made-for-TV movie about the South Hill rapist, ‘Sins of the Mother,” here’s your chance. It’s on Lifetime tonight at 8. The one big drawback is that it isn’t any good.

Historical note: Several readers told us that long ago, in railroad and restaurant lingo, a “Spokane” was a plate of baked beans.

Don’t say it.

Just wondering: Does anyone else refer to The Discovery Channel as the World War II channel? And speaking of World War II, do little boys still glue together models of B-17s, Spitfires, Zeros and ME-109s?

Warm-up question from a reader who wants to remain anonymous: Have you ever flipped off someone in traffic and then realized, too late, that it was a person you know?

Today’s Slice question: Where were you when a killer back spasm stopped you in your tracks?
