Stars’ 15-U Girls Lose, But Advance

Three straight Spokane Stars’ turnovers in the final 2 minutes while nursing a 55-54 lead fueled Massachusetts’ comeback in a 63-55 win Monday in the AAU 15-U girls basketball national championships in Indianapolis, Ind.

Spokane, which advances to the 32-team, double-elimination portion of the tournament with a 2-2 record in pool play, was led by Crystal Lee’s 21 points.

The Stars were plagued by 46 turnovers in the ragged game.

Neal Robertson of Richland scored 21 points to lead the Seafirst Select team from Eastern Washington to a 75-66 win over Austin, Texas, in its first game in the Las Vegas Prep Grand Finale in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Eastern Washington team, which plays Southern California tonight in its second of four pool games, also got 10 points from David Schillinger of West Valley.

Legion baseball

Spokane Federal Credit Union scored 10 runs in its last two at-bats, three on Brian Maley’s fifth-inning home run, in an 11-3, six-inning win over Kimmel. Maley had four RBIs.

Gil Pierce had two RBIs for SFCU.

Chris Kreider’s three-run double and Andy Furlott’s four-hit, sevenstrikeout pitching keyed Olympic Sports’ 9-2 victory over Scott’s Custom Homes.

Kanyon Anderson’s two-run single highlighted a three-run sixth inning that earned Global Federal Credit Union a 7-5 triumph over Spokane Athletic Supply.

Aaron Hancock struck out 11 and weathered a three-run Maxwell House uprising in the bottom of the seventh to pitch Chapter Eleven/ Longhorn Barbecue to a 6-3 win.

Garret Wideman had a two-run triple for the winners.

Golf

Suzi Stone of Spokane shot an 81 to qualify for match play beginning today in the Washington State Women’s Golf Association Championships in Renton.

Linda Farmin of Spokane missed the 32-player format with an 89. Carole Holland of Meridian Valley was medalist with a 76.

Britney Holt of Spokane wound up 20 shots back of the winner in the girls 15-17 division at the Optimist International Junior Championships last week in Orlando, Fla., with a 307.
