Panthers Put It All Together

GSL GIRLS

Much has changed in the month since Mead went to Central Valley and had to rally to squeak out a win.

Friday night at Mead, the second-ranked Panthers destroyed the Bears 63-41, running their Greater Spokane League winning streak to 27 games.

“We’re pretty excited - we played our best game of the year,” Mead coach Jeanne Helfer said. “They were more aggressive last time, but they’re a different team without Lisa.”

With point guard Lisa Lentz, the Bears built a 20-point lead in the first game, even though she didn’t score, before losing 54-49. Lentz, CV’s only senior, was lost with a knee injury two weeks ago.

“They’ve improved a bunch,” CV coach Dale Poffenroth said. “Their experienced showed tonight against our young kids. The things we do well, they match us. Mead is better than us.”

The Panthers (10-0, 14-0) pressured CV (6-5, 7-8) into 19 firsthalf turnovers, scoring 22 points off those miscues for a 33-13 lead. The Bears, who had a five-game winning streak, finished with 32 turnovers that Mead turned into 34 points.

Mead also intimidated the Bears inside, holding sophomore center Crystal Lee, who had 15 points in the first matchup, to four and junior forward Carrie Sanders, who had 18, to two.
