College Courses In Valley With Something For Everyone

Have you always wished you could cook sensational seafood dishes or sew quilts? Entertain your friends with magic tricks? Handle your finances more efficiently?

The Community Colleges of Spokane can help. New community college offerings this winter in the Valley include classes in cooking, sewing, magic and personal finance.

Classes meet evenings, usually at Valley schools. Some courses are completed in one night, others last several weeks. Fees range from $5 to $32.

Following is a list of new classes being offered in the Valley, along with sites, start dates and cost. For more information or to register, call 533-3770.

Me, Myself and I: Learn to identify your talents and explore ways to use them to overcome obstacles in your life. Broadway Elementary. $18. Jan. 19.

Pen and Ink on Wood: Create a decorative wooden “to do” board. West Valley High School. $12. Jan. 24.

Financial planning: Get an overview of personal financial planning issues. West Valley High School. $16. Jan. 24.

Seafood cooking: Learn to cook a variety of easy-to-make seafood dishes. Centennial Middle School. $7. Jan. 25.

Magic: Learn basic principles of performing magic tricks. Evergreen Junior High School. $22. Jan. 26.

Dream catchers: Create a decorative dream catcher. West Valley High School. $5. Jan. 30.

Quilting: Construct a full-size quilt with modified log-cabin blocks. Bowdish Junior High School. $14. Jan. 30.

Weather observation: A nontechnical course in weather observation and forecasting techniques. Broadway Elementary. $16. Feb. 1.

Stargazing: Basic astronomy instruction, plus a visit to Eastern Washington University’s planetarium. North Pines Junior High School. $15. Feb. 2.

Acting: Learn basic acting techniques and auditioning skills. Valley Repertory Theater. $32. Feb. 7.

Rice cooking: Learn to cook a variety of healthful rice dishes. Horizon Junior High School. $12. Feb. 16.

Patchwork sewing: Design and create a patchwork jacket. Bowdish Junior High School. $19. Feb. 22.

Faux-finish painting: Learn quick, inexpensive faux-finish painting techniques. Centennial Middle School. $14. Feb. 23.

Basket making: Learn to make papertwist baskets and decorate them with ribbon, lace and fabric. Centennial Middle School. $8. March 7.
