Whitworth season ends

In every way, the Whitworth Pirates were fit to be tied Friday night. As Whitworth’s Dustin McConnell was driving the lane for the go-ahead lay-in with 3 seconds left in overtime, officials called a jump ball that gave Virginia Wesleyan a controversial 74-71 win over the Pirates in the third round of the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament. The Pirates were eliminated after a 26-4 season.

Whitworth faces shorter, aggressive Marlins

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Don’t get him wrong: Felix Friedt is OK with scoring 35 points a game, if that’s what it takes. But the Whitworth center is just as comfortable drawing a crowd, then kicking the ball outside to help the Pirates continue their run in the Division III men’s basketball tournament.

Eastern impressed Montana at Big Sky semifinal

MISSOULA – Sometimes those old sports sayings are really true. Cliff Colimon and Laron Griffin really did leave it all on the floor here Tuesday night, which didn’t leave much energy for the postgame press conference.

Whitworth men count on key reserves

The Whitworth Pirates are deep into the postseason, but they’re definitely not out of their depth. Coach Matt Logie goes to his bench often, but three players have provided the spark that has carried the Pirates all the way to Friday’s third-round game in the NCAA Division III tournament in Whitewater, Wis., against Virginia Wesleyan.

Eastern’s season ends with loss to Montana

MISSOULA – There’s no 2-minute warning in basketball, but the Montana Grizzlies heard it anyway. “They dialed it up a notch in the last couple of minutes and we didn’t have an answer,” Eastern Washington coach Jim Hayford said after the Eagles fell 74-66 to the Grizzlies in the Big Sky Conference semifinals Tuesday night.

EWU men advance to conference semifinals

Fittingly, it was Jeffrey Forbes who punched Eastern’s ticket Saturday afternoon. With the Eagles clinging to a two-point lead with 40 seconds to play, Forbes punched the ball away from Idaho State’s Michael Morgan to help give Eastern an 81-75 win and a trip to the semifinals of the Big Sky men’s basketball tournament.

Eastern men guarding against overconfidence

Eastern Washington has beaten Idaho State twice in the last week, which in terms of today’s Big Sky Conference quarterfinal game means exactly ... nothing. If this were a normal best-of-3 series, it would be over, but the winner of today’s game at Reese Court advances to the Big Sky semifinals Tuesday in Missoula. The loser is finished.

Whitworth men hope to stand tall in Texas

The Whitworth men’s basketball team has been there before, in every way you can imagine. Emotionally, geographically and athletically, the Pirates will be right at home in the heart of Texas today for the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Factors conspire to keep Whitworth from home game

The NCAA Division III selection committee isn’t out to get Whitworth. But it is out to save money on travel expenses, and that – along with a lower ranking – is the reason the Pirates’ men’s basketball team is playing 1,600 miles from home this weekend in the first round of the national tournament.
