School Is Agog At People Who Cheer Zawgs

If St. Aloysius Gonzaga would have had any foresight four centuries ago, he might have taken a few moments off from battling the black plague and changed his surname to something sportscasters of the future could pronounce. Now that Gonzaga has become a national office-pool curiosity, with the school's first berth in the NCAA basketball tournament, it's become clear to those at the university that virtually no one east of the Bitterroots can say "Gon-ZAG-a."

Slipper Fits Gonzaga Rillie Drills 34 As Bulldogs Earn First Trip To Ncaa

Purposely, members of the Gonzaga men's basketball staff never mentioned the achievements of last year's team to the 1995 squad. After all, the predecessors had been the most successful in school history, and the newest edition - inexperienced and untested - could not be held up to those standards.

Rillie Fires Zags Into Wcc Semis

For most of his previous appearances here, John Rillie has been only so-so at Toso. Saturday night, though, motivated by the knowledge that this is his last go-round in the West Coast Conference Tournament in Toso Pavilion, the senior Gonzaga guard turned in the game of his career.

A Touch Of Class Worth More Than Espn Airtime

Some fans might not want to read this story: its contents aren't spectacular enough to appear tonight on SportsCenter. And it might not be exciting, because we're not going to attain personal gain by crawling atop a humiliated foe. These are, after all, the things that have become important in sports: The temporary, the superficial, the flashy, the immediate, the telegenic.

No Other Problems To Worry About?

One of the tie-wearers recruited me off the sports section to comment on the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition - presumably because of my familiarity with sports publications and not my expertise on the effects of sea spray on stretched Lycra. Well, there's no Kathy Ireland, Stephanie Seymour or Elle Macpherson. This makes me wonder if there's been another labor dispute I haven't heard of. "Super Models Fail to Reach Terms, Walk Off Beach." So, some veterans were absent. Still, I thought Ashley showed athletic flexibility in her cotton-Lycra miniskirt suit (by Keiko, $132).

Zags Feast On San Francisco

With Gonzaga coming just one 3-point basket from tying the NCAA record of 23, one could consider the Bulldogs' 106-67 win over San Francisco as a classic. In fact, it was a Big Classic. And aside from the few USF fans on hand, the most startled man in the stands was Dan Nagy, owner of five Wendy's restaurants in Spokane - a brave man who dishes out coupons for free hamburgers whenever GU makes nine 3-pointers in a game.

Final Stretch: Wcc In For Wild Finish

Only one regular-season weekend of play remains in the WWCC -- the Wild West Coast Conference. (We added that first "W" because it seems appropriate at the moment).

Future So Bright, Hoops Teammates Can’t See Him

Ask yourself this: Would you be reading this story if it were done by a replacement columnist? I read that somebody paid $200,000 for Al Cowlings' Ford Bronco. It seems pretty stupid since the thing didn't look like it could go over 40 on the L.A. freeways.

O’Brien Injury Leaves Top Event Hamstrung

Sheldon Blockburger came away as the star of the USA National Indoor MultiEvent Championship and Hamstring Festival at the Kibbie Dome. Blockburger won the men's heptathlon with 6,035 points as first-day leader and decathlon world-record holder Dan O'Brien pulled out of the competition before Saturday's events because of hamstring cramps.

Leaping Feet First Into Hoops

Just a few years ago, officials of the Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom decided to put together a basketball team. They brought in the tallest guys in the state, very few of whom had previously played, and competed in a tournament on a concrete court.

O’Brien Will Go Forth As Hometown Hero In National Multi-Event Meet At Idaho

Decathlon world-record holder Dan O'Brien will be one of the featured athletes in the 1995 U.S.A. National Indoor Multi-Event Championships Friday and Saturday at the University of Idaho's Kibbie Dome. Men will compete in the seven-event heptathlon, with women going in the five-event pentathlon. The meet will serve as part of the selection process for the World Indoor Championships, which are to be held in Barcelona, Spain on March 10-12, 1995. "It's great to be staying at home," said O'Brien, a Moscow resident. "I don't have to acclimate to any time changes, or put up with any of the hassles of traveling. This is the place where I practice, and I am very comfortable and familiar with this track."
