  • Turning the DC-3 around so that it is facing into the wind and is closer to the hanger. In preparation for ground school training. Exactly two years ago today this plane along with 26 other DC-3s where in Normandy France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Taken at Feltz's Field 6 June 2021.

    Photographer: Tom Bauer

  • Me turning over a DC-3 engine before start up. The crankcase to radial engines is in the center and oil can run down and fill a cylinder. Bad things happen if a piston tries to compress oil. This engine is 1350 Hp and 18 cylinders in two banks of 9. The propeller is connected to the engine through a 6:9 gear reducer, so I am working against the gear train trying to compress all those cylinders. Two complete prop revolutions are needed to compress all cylinders. This is equivalent to pulling through 6 blades. I barely managed two. Taken at Feltz's Field, Historic Flight Foundation.
