Kokanee salvage season opens in Idaho

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game approved a kokanee salvage season on the North Fork Clearwater River downstream of Dworshak Dam and in the Clearwater River downstream of the North Fork Clearwater River.

The salvage season started Thursday, according to a news release.

Officials were prompted to open a salvage season because kokanee were being entrained through Dworshak Dam. Entrained fish are trapped and will eventually die.

The salvage order, which was signed by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission deputy director, allows anglers to keep as many kokanee as they want (fishing license still required) and collect them through road and reel, dip net or by hand, according to a news release.

Anglers can only target kokanee when using a dip net or by hand. The season will last until May 31.
